A loyalty program nobody knows about is a design exercise. Everything below is what separates the venues with five hundred members from the ones with eleven.
Your staff are the entire channel
Guests join because someone asked them to. Not because of a poster. Give your team one sentence they can say while the card machine thinks — “do you want a stamp? nine coffees and the tenth is on us” — and the program works. Skip this and nothing else on this page matters.
Ask at the right moment
- While they are paying, not while they are ordering — they are standing still and their phone is already out.
- On the second visit, not the first. “You were here last week” is a much better opening than a cold pitch.
- Never while there is a queue of four behind them.
In the room
- A small card at the till with your code and one line of copy.
- The code on the QR menu card, so a seated guest can join while they wait.
- One sign, not five. A wall of loyalty posters reads as desperation.
Online
Post the reward, not the mechanism. “Free coffee after nine” is a message; “we now have a digital loyalty program” is not. Put the link in your bio and mention it once a month, not once a week.
Make the reward worth having
The reward should be something a guest would genuinely walk in for, and something that costs you less than the visits that earned it. A free coffee after nine is both. Ten percent off is neither — nobody has ever crossed the street for ten percent.
Frequently asked
How many members is good?
Compare it to your regulars, not to a target. A café serving 200 people a day with 300 members is doing very well.
Should the first stamp be free?
A stamp for joining is a cheap and effective push — it turns an empty card into a card that has started, which people finish far more often.
Can I see who my best customers are?
Yes, in the loyalty statistics: who visits most, who is close to a reward, and who has not been in for a while.
